Olena Chynka named November’s Allianz Athlete of the Month

Ukraine’s Olena Chynka has been voted the Allianz Athlete of the Month for November after dazzling at the 2018 World Para Dance Sport European Championships.

Chynka danced to five European titles over three days in Lomianki, Poland, becoming the competition’s most decorated dancer. The Ukrainian won both her singles standard and freestyle class 2 events. Together with dance partner Oleksandr Onishchenko, the duo were the judges’ top favourites in the standard, Latin and freestyle class 2 styles.

Chynka received 67 per cent of the public votes. China’s snowboarder Sun Qi was second with 20 per cent and wheelchair fencer Haiyan Gu came in third with seven per cent. Finnish snowboarder Matti Suur-Hamari and South Korean judoka Soohee Choi were also nominated.

June – Sevda Altunoluk, TUR, goalball

July – Morteza Mehrzadselakjani, IRI, sitting volleyball

August – Greg Polychronidis, GRE, boccia

September – Corne de Koning, NED, rowing

October – Japanese women’s goalball team

November – Olena Chynka, UKR, Para dance sport
